At the time that I am writing this, Donald Trump has an estimated 290 electoral college votes and Hillary Clinton has an estimated 218. President Elect Donald Trump is addressing his watch party, and the nation. I understand that there is a large public that chose Trump to lead our country, but I am also deeply, deeply saddened.
I acknowledge that there are issues in our country. I understand that letting refugees into the country scares you. I understand that jobs are leaving the country which leaves many of you (us) out of a job without a place to turn to. I understand that you feel unheard. You feel disenfranchised. You were looking for a candidate that does not fit into the political mold that has ignored you for so long.
I hear you, and I can respect these things, even if I disagree with you about the methods to resolve the issues. What I cannot stand for, is if each of you to begin acting like this man.
If you think that a Donald Trump presidency gives you the right to hate someone because of the color of their skin, you are wrong.
If you think that a Donald Trump presidency makes it okay for you to talk about women using “locker room talk”, to grab and assault them, you are wrong.
If you think that a Donald Trump presidency allows you to openly hate the LGBTQIA community, you are wrong.
I still hope that for most of you, your vote was based on policy and not an underlying hate that you wanted permission to express. Just in case the latter applies to you, I would like to remind you all that human rights and human decency will not change regardless of which individual is in office.
If you are wrong in these ways, I will stand up against you, and I will not be alone.
With that being said, I truly hope that these next four years are productive, progressive, and good. I’ll be working my very hardest to be sure that they are, and I hope that you will join me.
